Mokau River Tours Ltd
Taranaki, New Zealand
0800 mokau big boat (0800 66528 2 )
We depart from our Boundary Creek Pier, 4 Km up Te Mahoe Rd on the North side of the Mokau River, cruising on the largest ship to navigate the Mokau River since 1936 (69 years ago). The history of the river is as long as the river itself (second longest in the North Inland). We give a commentary about life on and around the river including stories about ferry-men, bootleggers, local Maori tribes and inedible biscuits as you cruise pass some of the best native trees in New Zealand.
Mokau River Tours is owned by the Whittaker family and we operate the business from or family home in Mokau. We sailed the M.V.Glenroyal across the Mokau bar for the first time on the 24th March 2004 and operated out first tours in May 2004. We have a great depth of knowledge of the river and district as the family lived in the area for over 40 years. Ian Whittaker is Mokau’s local historian and skipper of MV Glenroyal and Belinda Whittaker cooks the scons on board each day. As a family we had a catering business that serviced coach loads of tourist and passers-by. We have brought these skills to our new adventure. Enjoy our freshly cooked morning/ afternoon tea. We have a light lunch option available, (please request this option at time of booking).
MV GlenRoyal is able a carry 60 people with ease; she is safe, stable and warm. M.V. GlenRoyal has a cabin that can seat 30 people, a back deck that can be enclosed, two toilets and an elevated viewing deck. This deck is accessible by ladder steps.
The Mokau Rivers banks are lined with outstanding coastal forest and whitebait fishing jetties. The fishing season goes from the second week in August to the last day in November. The discovery voyage will take approximately 3 hours, finishing back at the pier and car park facility.
Come and enjoy a relaxing day out on the Mokau River. The voyage is ideal for birthdays, family gatherings and organizations. This is a fantastic way to see native New Zealand bush and trees. A must for anyone passing though Taranaki on vacation wanting a small adventure. We can even organize to local person to take you on a tramping around local farm where a New Zealand movie was made.
Departure time changes with the tide. Please note: schedule may change at short notice because of unpredictable river conditions. Sorry NO cell-phone coverage, Eftpos or credit card facility.
